Therese & Don
In July of 2016 I donated half my liver to my sister.
Therese asked me to do a run when I recovered to raise awareness of Organ Donation and Transplantation.
Here is our story.

Running To Save Lives
In July of 2016 I donated half my liver to my sister, Therese.
This is how it came about - a few months beforehand I received a call from my sister. She asked if I would consider being a donor. I had never heard of a ‘Living-donor Transplant’ before. It took me a millisecond to decide!
Therese has a rare disease called Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), which used to be called primary biliary cirrhosis and is a type of liver disease caused by damage to the bile ducts in the liver.
Much like other forms of liver disease, PBC permanently damages the liver as tissue is replaced with scar tissue (fibrosis). As more scar tissue develops, the structure and function of the liver are affected. The exact cause of PBC is unknown. But it may be related to a problem with the immune system, which is the body's natural defense system. Unfortunately, at this time there is no cure.
This was Therese’s second transplant and without my liver being donated the reality is that she would not be alive today. A sad truth for the many, many people waiting for an organ donation or transplantation.
The biggest challenge is that there are simply not enough people registered as donors and so people die waiting for an organ to become available.
A challenge that I agreed to take on in a small way - when Therese asked me, was to do a run to raise awareness of Organ Donation and Transplantation.
For those of you who do not know me, I’m an avid ultra and trail runner - it’s a passion!
It's been a long battle back to recovery and I am hoping I am ready to go and my body agrees to play ball. I have a support team established, a daily plan and I hoping to run from Ballycastle to Castletownbere in 12 days.
The goal is to get 1,000 people to Register for a Donor Card.
